We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
This is one of the most transformative statement ever written. It is short and to the point, but here is some of what that brief utterance is saying:
Establishment of True Justice
It is important to realize the Constitution of United States of America was written by some of the most educated and well-known men of the day. However, that document established rights to everyone and not just to those few elites. They were tired of tyranny. They were tired of lacking the ability to choose for themselves the way their life would go.
Ensure Domestic Tranquility
The Constitution came out during a very difficult time in our country’s history. One such instance that directly related to the framing of The Constitution was Shays’ Rebellion.
Shays’ Rebellion was a formal (and armed) uprising in Massachusets by farmers who were upset about being forced to repay war debts. The uprising failed in its immediate goal to take over an armory, but it did, however, influence our Founding Fathers… though the extent of that influence is not known.
The Constitution was hoped to act as stitches that would keep the developing union together.
Provide for the Common Defense
The Union was still a hatchling and there was still a real threat of it being decimated by other nations if it stood separately. By banding together they hoped to be able to fend off any unwanted advances.
Promote the General Welfare
This is a hotly debated topic to this day in congress. Welfare. When the framers of The Constitution penned this, their intent was to create a federal government that would be able to take care of its members as far as it was possible. What that means today is going to remain debated for some time. Hopefully, we can all get on the same page at some point.
Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and Our Posterity
Life. Liberty. The pursuit of happiness. Whatever it is you want, you get to go after it. They are your liberties to obtain and you are free to believe as you wish.
